A complex property loss, a disputed liability position or a deteriorating client relationship can reveal more about a claims professional than a routine file ever will. In commercial claims, career progression is rarely driven by tenure alone. It comes from demonstrating sound technical judgement, managing competing interests and giving insurers, brokers and insureds confidence that difficult matters are under control.

The commercial claims market rewards people who can move beyond file administration without losing discipline around coverage, evidence, reserving and communication. Whether the next move is into senior claims, technical leadership, major and complex loss, account management, loss adjusting or a claims leadership role, the strongest candidates build capability with a clear commercial purpose.

## What drives commercial claims career progression?

[Commercial claims roles](https://hookerheijden.com.au/insurance_claims_jobs) sit at the point where policy response, client expectation, legal exposure and financial outcomes meet. That makes progression more nuanced than simply taking on a higher claim authority or a larger portfolio.

Employers look for professionals who understand the full claim lifecycle and can make appropriate decisions at each stage. This includes interpreting policy wording, identifying coverage issues early, setting realistic reserves, appointing the right external parties and maintaining momentum when a matter becomes contentious. It also includes knowing when a decision needs escalation rather than trying to resolve every issue independently.

Technical depth remains the foundation. A claims professional handling ISR, liability, professional indemnity, management liability, contract works, marine or cyber claims needs enough product knowledge to recognise the issues that change an insurer's exposure. But technical knowledge on its own does not always translate into a senior opportunity. Senior appointments are generally made when a person can also explain the position clearly to a broker, insured, underwriter, lawyer, loss adjuster or executive stakeholder.

The commercial element matters. Employers value claims professionals who can see the operational and relationship consequences of a claims decision. A correct coverage position delivered poorly may still damage a broker relationship or create unnecessary friction with an insured. Equally, an overly accommodating approach can create reserve pressure, inconsistent practice and poor portfolio outcomes. Progression comes from handling that balance well.

## Build depth before pursuing breadth

There is a temptation to move quickly from a specialist portfolio into a broad senior claims role. Sometimes that is the right move, particularly in a smaller insurer, underwriting agency or third-party administrator where broad exposure is essential. In larger organisations, however, deep expertise in a class of business can be the more valuable route.

A claims professional who has developed a credible reputation in complex liability, property, financial lines or casualty can progress into technical specialist, complex claims or referral positions. These roles can offer greater influence, more sophisticated work and strong pathways into team leadership, underwriting collaboration, risk, dispute resolution or legal roles.

The key is to make that specialisation visible. Keep a record of matters that demonstrate increasing complexity: unusual coverage issues, significant quantum, multi-party disputes, recoveries, litigated claims, catastrophe events or sensitive client outcomes. The point is not to disclose confidential details. It is to articulate the nature of the decision-making, the stakeholders involved and the result achieved.

Breadth is still valuable, but it should be purposeful. If your aim is a national claims management role, exposure to multiple product lines, vendor panels, delegated authority frameworks, compliance reporting and operational performance will strengthen your profile. If the goal is a major loss or technical referral career, depth in a defined class may matter more.

### Seek work that changes your judgement

Not every additional responsibility develops senior capability. Taking on more volume may show resilience, but it does not necessarily show the judgement required for progression.

Look for assignments that require you to form and defend a position. This might involve reviewing complex policy wording, contributing to a large-loss strategy, negotiating settlement parameters, managing a broker escalation or working with lawyers on a coverage dispute. These are the experiences that show you can operate beyond a standard workflow.

It is also worth seeking exposure to the commercial decisions surrounding claims. Participate in reserve reviews, claims trend discussions, reinsurer reporting, panel performance reviews or product feedback sessions where available. Claims leaders need to understand how individual files affect portfolio performance, client retention, capacity relationships and underwriting appetite.

## Strengthen your influence across the market

Commercial claims is relationship-driven work. The quality of your internal and external relationships can materially affect the outcomes you achieve and the opportunities available to you.

Internally, build productive working relationships with underwriting, distribution, risk, legal, finance and operations teams. Underwriters value claims professionals who provide practical feedback on wording ambiguity, recurring loss causes and emerging exposures. Brokers value people who are responsive, clear and able to distinguish between a firm coverage position and an issue that still requires investigation.

Externally, learn how to brief and manage loss adjusters, investigators, solicitors, barristers, engineers and other service providers. Senior claims professionals do not simply outsource activity. They set a clear strategy, challenge advice where necessary and ensure external spend is proportionate to the matter.

Your communication style is central to this. Strong claims communication is direct, accurate and calm. It explains what is known, what remains uncertain, what will happen next and why. This is particularly important where an insured is under pressure and a simple answer is not yet available.

## Move from managing files to improving the function

The transition from senior claims professional to claims leader usually requires evidence that you can improve the function, not just manage a demanding portfolio.

That may mean identifying a recurring process failure, improving triage, introducing a better claims reporting rhythm, refining a service provider panel or supporting more consistent reserve practices. It could also involve mentoring less experienced claims staff, creating practical guidance notes or helping a team manage a surge in notifications following a major event.

People leadership is valuable, but it is not limited to formal line management. A technical claims professional who can develop others, give useful feedback and create confidence in a team is already demonstrating leadership potential. If a management position is your objective, seek responsibility for workflow allocation, quality assurance, performance conversations and recruitment exposure where possible.

There is a trade-off. Moving into leadership can reduce the time spent on the most technical files. For some professionals, that is a welcome shift towards strategy, people and business performance. For others, a technical authority or complex claims pathway will be more satisfying and commercially rewarding. The right choice depends on the work you want to be known for.

## Position your experience for the next role

A strong CV for commercial claims should do more than list claim types and systems. It should show your authority level, the nature of your portfolio, the complexity of matters handled and the outcomes you have influenced.

Describe the scale of responsibility in terms that matter to a prospective employer. Include relevant product classes, broker or insured engagement, litigation exposure, reserve management, recovery activity, vendor management and any process or team contribution. Be precise about your role in a result. Saying you "managed complex claims" is less persuasive than explaining that you led coverage and settlement strategy across high-value liability matters involving multiple parties and external legal advisers.

Interview preparation should be equally practical. Expect questions about a difficult coverage issue, an escalation with a broker or insured, a reserve decision, a disputed claim and a time you influenced another stakeholder without formal authority. Prepare examples that show judgement, not just activity.

Salary and title should be considered in context. A move to a larger insurer may bring specialist training, clearer governance and exposure to complex portfolios. A role with an underwriting agency, TPA or niche insurer may offer broader responsibility and closer access to decision-makers. Neither route is automatically better. The relevant question is whether the role adds capability and market credibility that supports your longer-term direction.

## Read the market before making a move

Claims recruitment is often shaped by portfolio growth, regulatory expectations, catastrophic events, product expansion and changing claims service models. A role can look attractive on paper yet provide limited progression if the authority structure is rigid or the portfolio has little complexity. Conversely, a smaller team can create meaningful advancement where there is genuine scope to take ownership and contribute beyond the job description.

Before accepting a role, ask how claim authority is allocated, what technical support is available, how success is measured and whether there is a defined pathway into senior, specialist or leadership positions. Understand the claims philosophy as well. An employer that values considered investigation, clear stakeholder management and technical development is more likely to support sustainable career growth than one focused only on closure volumes.

Hooker & Heijden works closely with commercial insurance employers that understand the difference between a capable claims handler and a professional ready to influence complex outcomes. That market perspective can help candidates assess not only the immediate vacancy, but the quality of the career platform behind it.

The next worthwhile opportunity should give you more than a new title. It should place you closer to more consequential decisions, stronger market relationships and work that sharpens the judgement your career will ultimately be built on.
